This old village rental house is ideal for a couple, and very comfortable for two couples on holiday - or for a couple with a friend. The romantic village of Bellapais is the most beautiful in northern Cyprus and retains the charm of less hurried, bygone times.


Set in the hills, above the dramatic ruins of a 12th Century Abbey, it was made famous by Lawrence Durrell, who wrote about his life there in the book Bitter Lemons.

THE VILLA FOR RENTAL

The airy and spacious 200-year-old Village House lies right in the heart of Bellapais - a short stroll from the Abbey, the famous Tree of Idleness (an ancient mulberry) and its namesake cafe, restaurants and a charming local bar. The walls of the house are three-foot thick, and in the evening there is nearly always a delicious breeze, ensuring the house stays cool and comfortable.

The property has recently been lovingly restored to seamlessly mix modern facilities with original features such as beamed ceilings, elegant arched doorways, and stone floors. Furniture is a blend of antiques and original Cypriot artefacts.

RENTAL ACCOMMODATION
Sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms

The house has two double bedrooms, both with direct access to modern bathrooms.

Upstairs double bedroom

The upstairs bedroom is bright and airy and features an antique four-poster bed. It is adjacent to a spacious bathroom which has a wonderful deep bath and stone floor.

Downstairs double bedroom

The downstairs bedroom is enormous, with a king size bed, and is accessed by a wrought-iron spiral staircase. It is especially cool in summer and has an ensuite toilet and shower room.

LOCATION

The town of Kyrenia (or Girne) with its exquisite Venetian harbour, is just a few miles down the hill and is a charming place to enjoy an early breakfast or a cup of afternoon tea.

The ruined Roman city of Salamis, near Famagusta, is an extraordinary ancient site. Nicosia (Lefkosia) too, just half an hour's drive away, is worth a trip to see restored Ottoman buildings and well-preserved ancient churches. But no visit to northern Cyprus is really complete without a trip to the unique and wild Karpaz peninsular. Here you'll find monasteries, Byzantine ruins and perfect, empty sandy beaches in what sometimes feels like an almost uninhabited landscape.

HOW TO GET TO HERE

The nearest airport is Ercan in the north, which is about 40 mins drive away. But it is also now possible to fly to Larnaca in the south and take a taxi across the border to northern Cyprus. The journey time is about an hour and it costs around £45. Nicosia is about half an hour's drive, Famagusta and Salamis about an hour and a quarter. From Bellapais to the Karpaz is about two and a half hour's drive.

The price for this rental is from £325 per week, depending on numbers of people, length of stay and time of year. Please enquire about availability for your dates and costing.

A taxi pick-up to the house can be arranged for £25, and car hire places can be recommended.
